Roseman’s first Utah nursing graduates achieve 100 percent pass rate on NCLEX-RN exam

SOUTH JORDAN, UTAH – December 6, 2011 – The first class of graduates from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Roseman University’s South Jordan, Utah campus achieved a perfect 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-RN examination.

“It is quite a challenge for a nursing program to achieve a 100 percent pass rate, and even more challenging to score 100 percent with the first graduating class,” said Dr. Marlene Luna, Dean of the Roseman University College of Nursing, South Jordan.

A report from the Utah State Board of Nursing shows that among nursing programs in Utah, the 2011 passing rates for the NCLEX-RN exam ranged from 67.69 percent to 100 percent, with an average of 88.36 percent. Overall, nursing programs in the state of Utah do well when compared to other states, Guam, American Samoa, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  A National Council of State Boards of Nursing report indicates that the 2011 national average pass rate for first-time candidates educated in the U.S. was just under 90 percent.

“Congratulations are in order to our great faculty and for the students in the first cohort who, early on, recognized their responsibility as the inaugural class to represent the College of Nursing in a professional manner,” said Luna. “The Class of 2011 leaves behind a great legacy, and a standard of measure for the classes that will follow.”

Dean Luna said that while it would be great to achieve a 100 percent pass rate every year, the goal for Roseman University’s Utah nursing program is to maintain a consistent pass rate between 90 and 100 percent.

Roseman University Unveils Utah’s First Four-Year College of Dental Medicine

Roseman’s Doctor of Dental Medicine program the only one of its kind in Utah

South Jordan, UT – October 27, 2011 – Roseman University of Health Sciences, a private, non-profit, accredited institution, dedicated its new College of Dental Medicine in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, October 27 at 10 a.m. City and University officials, faculty, students and esteemed community members were in attendance.

Spencer P. Eccles, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, provided special remarks at the ceremony, and members of the College’s faculty and inaugural Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) Class took guests on tours of the facility.

Roseman opened its South Jordan campus in 2006 with the College of Pharmacy and has continued to grow, adding a College of Nursing in January 2010 and breaking ground on the College of Dental Medicine in April of the same year. Prior to the University launching the new DMD program, any residents interested in pursuing dentistry could not complete their dental education in Utah. According to the American Dental Association’s The Economics of Dental Education, Utah has the highest number per capita of students who leave the state to pursue dental education. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s designates most Utah counties, particularly in rural areas, as having shortages of dental professionals.  For these reasons, Roseman determined a College of Dental Medicine would benefit the students and residents of Utah.

The need for a DMD program was further substantiated in Utah and the intermountain region by the program’s first-year application numbers. A total of 1,220 students applied to attend, and were narrowed down to Roseman’s inaugural class of 64 students. Many of these students are from rural communities throughout the intermountain region, and approximately half are from Utah.

“The need for a dental school in Utah extends beyond offering local students the chance to attend a DMD program close to home,” said Dr. Richard Buchanan, Dean of Roseman University College of Dental Medicine. “Our patient clinic will also expand access to quality, affordable dental care for low-income and traditionally underserved populations in the state.”

The 64 students in the class of 2015 will be the first to attend classes in the new five-story 125,000 square foot facility. The first phase of the building, unveiled during the dedication, features a large classroom with the latest in multimedia technology, team breakout rooms, six imaging rooms, two wet labs, conference rooms, student and faculty lounges. Also part of the first phase is a patient clinic with 80 dental operatories that will initially be used to provide clinic simulation courses for first and second year students and subsequently to provide dental care to residents of the Salt Lake valley and surrounding areas. The clinic will provide emergency dental care beginning in January 2012, and will open for general dental care in 2013.

A second phase with additional classroom and lab facilities, as well as additional dental clinics, will open in coming years as the program expands. Once the clinic reaches full capacity, it will include 189 dental operatories where students, under the direct supervision of faculty who are licensed dentists, will treat 300-350 patients per day.

Roseman University’s Utah Dental Medicine Program receives CODA accreditation

– Utah’s first and only Doctor of Dental Medicine program is now preparing to enroll its inaugural class –

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – August 4, 2011 – Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine, South Jordan has been granted initial accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) for its Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program.

“The College of Dental Medicine’s Administrative team and faculty have worked extremely hard to complete the accreditation process prior to the enrollment of the inaugural Doctor of Dental Medicine class this fall,” said Dr. Tom Metzger, Co-Chancellor of Roseman University, South Jordan. “Receiving initial accreditation is an important step in validating the quality of the program, and we commend the DMD program for its success.”

Roseman University’s DMD program submitted the Application for Initial Accreditation to the Commission in September 2010, and hosted an accreditation site visit in March 2011. The Commission considered the recommendations of the Site Visit Team and Review Committee at its August 2011 meeting and granted a status of “initial accreditation” on August 4.

Once a program is granted “initial accreditation” status, CODA will conduct another site visit in the second year of the program, and a third site visit prior to the first class of students graduating from the four-year program. CODA will then conduct follow-up site reviews every seven years.

“We are delighted and proud that the DMD program met the requirements of this rigorous process,” said Dr. Richard Buchanan, Dean of RosemanUniversity College of Dental Medicine, South Jordan. “This means our students will graduate from an accredited program and will meet this important aspect for obtaining professional licensure.”

The inaugural DMD class of 64 students will be on campus for orientation next week. Classes begin August 15.

This comes on the heels of the College of Nursing, South Jordan’s accreditation for its Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the NationalLeague for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) on July 28. Roseman University of Health Sciences is also regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Roseman University College of Nursing, South Jordan receives initial accreditation from NLNAC

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – July 28, 2011 – Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Nursing, South Jordan has been granted initial accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) for its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (BSN).

Obtaining initial accreditation is the final step in the NLNAC national accreditation process, a process designed to measure the program’s commitment to nursing education and adherence to the NLNAC’s criteria for quality education.

“The accreditation process is an important one in validating the quality and success of our programs, and is the culmination of much hard work from faculty, staff, and students in the College of Nursing,” said Dr. Tom Metzger, Co-Chancellor of Roseman University, South Jordan.

Following an extensive self-study conducted by Roseman University College of Nursing, South Jordan, an NLNAC team visited the Utah campus in the spring for a site visit, and recommended the program for initial accreditation based on compliance with six NLNAC standards. The standards include: (1) adherence to Roseman’s stated mission, and administrative leadership, (2) qualified faculty and staff, (3) effective student policies and student services, (4) a curriculum that prepares students to achieve outcomes necessary to practice nursing professionally, (5) appropriate resources (fiscal, physical, and learning) that promote achievement for students, and (6) outcomes that measure and evaluate student learning in order to demonstrate that graduates have achieve competencies consistent with professional standards.

After the visit, the team prepared a report and presented it to an Evaluation Review Panel as well as the NLNAC staff, who referred it to the 15-member NLNAC Board of Commissioners for a final decision.

The site visit team was impressed with Roseman University’s innovative approach to education and out-of-the-box thinking, including the use of the block curriculum, and the active, collaborative learning environment created by the faculty and embraced by the students.

“The state of Utah mandates that nursing programs acquire national accreditation to ensure that each student is provided the highest quality education,” said Dr. Marlene Luna, Dean of Roseman University College of Nursing in South Jordan. “Receiving NLNAC accreditation validates to the faculty, and assures the students, and the nursing and medical communities, that Roseman University College of Nursing, South Jordan is providing the very best education possible. We are all very pleased with the NLNAC review of our Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, and with the outcome.”

The next accreditation review for the College of Nursing will take place in Spring 2016. Roseman University of Health Sciences is also regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
